Twenty excited choristers from Guelph Youth Singers are preparing for the performance opportunity of their lifetime. GYS choristers ranging in age from 10 to 17 will help to form the Honour Choir for the Children in Harmony Choral Festival in Walt Disney World, Florida. GYS leaves on Monday, May 19th and will be returning on Sunday, May 25th. The Honour Choir at this year’s festival consists of choristers from two top-notch choral organizations conducted by Linda Beaupré – the Bach Children’s Chorus and Guelph Youth Singers. Renowned composer Eleanor Daley will be the accompanist for this tour. As members of the Honour Choir, the choristers will have the opportunity to perform a special programme at Disney World’s Epcott Centre for the public and for the other participating choirs, who are drawn from across North America. Beaupré has chosen to perform all-Canadian music in the Honour Choir’s solo performances, and will feature music by Eleanor Daley, Stephen Hatfield, John Govedas, Rupert Lang, Stuart Calvert, Lydia Adams and R. Murray Schafer. |

The Elora Lions Club will host Victoria Day Fireworks on Monday May 19th, with family fun beginning at 7:30pm at the Elora and District Community Centre. The Grand Celtic Pipe Band will perform. There will be tethered balloon rides and a food booth. Fireworks start at dusk (sometime after 9:30pm).
Admission is by donation, with proceeds to Bissell Park Improvements. The rain date is Sunday May 25th. |

Guelph & Wellington’s Spring Sprint, Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada’s national fundraising walkathon, features 2.5 km or 5km walk or run and a 10km run. Pledges raised are used to fund research and also help to provide education, information and support to the estimated 55,000 Canadians currently living with a brain tumour.

Guelph's Bryan DeCorso Wins Pro Golf Event |

Bryan DeCorso ran away with the South Georgia Classic presented by First State Bank and Trust Co. for his first win on the Nationwide Tour Sunday (May 4th). The former GOLF CHANNEL on-course commentator shot a final-round 3-under 69 to win by three over Greg Owen (72) and Bryce Molder (69).
DeCorso, a 36-year-old native of Guelph fired a four-day total of 14-under 284, and picked up the largest paycheck of his career.
"I think this eclipses my career-best check by about $100,000," he said of the billboard-sized replica check. DeCorso's portion of the $625,000 purse was $112,500 and puts him in great position to grab one of the coveted 25 PGA TOUR cards at year's end.

The Intercounty Baseball League is set to go for the 2008 season. The schedule kicks off with five games during the Opening Weekend of May 3 and 4. There are two games on Saturday, May 3 – Hamilton Thunderbirds visit the Guelph Royals and the Stratford Nationals play the Dodgers in Oshawa.
The 162 game schedule concludes on Sunday July 20.
The Toronto Maple Leafs will host the IBL All-Star Classic at Christie Pits on Saturday July 5. As defending league champs, the Leafs will face a team of IBL All-Stars in the special event. |

Drew Doughty OHL's best Defenceman |

The Ontario Hockey League today (Thursday April 24) announced that Drew Doughty of the Guelph Storm has won the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the OHL's Most Outstanding Defenceman for the 2007-08 season.
Doughty, an 18-year-old native of London, ON, scored 13 goals and 37 assists for 50 points in 58 games this season with the Storm. Doughty also helped Team Canada win the gold medal at the World Junior Championships and participated in the ADT Canada-Russia Challenge in November, the Home Hardware CHL-NHL Top Prospects Game in January and the OHL All-Star Classic in February.
Doughty, the fifth overall pick in the 2005 OHL Priority Selection, is a top rated prospect for the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. In the OHL Coaches Poll, Doughty finished first in voting as the Best Offensive Defenceman category and second in the Best Defensive Defenceman category for the Western Conference.

The 2008 NHL Entry Draft remains on track to be the Steven Stamkos show. Stamkos, who has been ranked the No. 1 draft-eligible prospect since this past summer, remained No. 1 Thursday when NHL Central Scouting released its final ranking of the North American players eligible for the 2008 Entry Draft, which will be held June 20-21 in Ottawa.
Russia's Nikita Filatov is the top-ranked European skater. Thomas McCollum of the Guelph Storm is the top-rated North American goalie and Sweden's Jakob Markstrom is the top-ranked European goalie.
Tampa Bay owns the No. 1 pick this season after winning the NHL Entry Draft Lottery. The club is expected to take Stamkos, unless it trades the pick.
American Zach Bogosian, who is playing for Peterborough in the OHL, jumped one spot from the midseason ranking to take the No. 2 ranking, passing Guelph's Drew Doughty, who now sits at No. 3.
