Our Olympic Women celebrate....

Saturday, February 27, 2010

I’m sorry but I don’t see the reason for the huge backlash against our Olympic Women’s Hockey team for their celebration party. The media has made this an issue. Rule number one ladies: next time you have a party, make sure there’s no idiot around with a camera. The fans were gone and the only ones left in the ice area were the rink workers and a few strangling media people. One newspaper story described it as a ‘boozy party.’ They were drinking Champaign and beer and smoking a few cigars. I think it’s unfair to characterize this as a boozy party. Sure, they should have been more attentive to the fact that Maria-Philip Poulin is underage. In BC, the drinking age is 18 although Poulin will be 19 in a month. So the uproar is that people are saying it showed no class and they should apologize. Another story says they may be kicked out of the Olympic Village. So they had a party. They deserve one. They weren’t out on Robson Street turning over cars and they didn’t trash their hotel room like a previous team from a neighbouring country did in Nagano. If this had happened with the men’s team, no one would have said a word.
