Buying summer stuff...in the winter!

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

You would think I would have learned by now. Every winter my wife and I try to get away to the sunny south for a week and forget about winter. Every year, about a week before we leave I discover that all my shorts and summer wear have mysteriously shrunk since I last wore them. I don’t know why. It must have something to do with the humidity in the drawers that I store them in. It couldn’t have anything to do with the 3 Christmas turkeys or the pumpkin pie (s) that I have  consumed over the past weeks. This discovery is followed by a panicked trip out to find new shorts and sandals. Ever tried to buy shorts and sandals in January in Ontario? Not an easy task. They call it “cruise wear”. Basically, it’s the crap left over from last summer that nobody bought (and for good reason) and they charge you twice as much for it. The funny thing is I’m pretty sure I’m not the only person this happens too. I’ve been to Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and Mexico and each time we go I can usually pick out the Canadian who had to buy shorts or bathing suits in January. UGLY! Can you say limited selection? “Hey, nice banana yellow silk shorts Mr. Hannah” is a phrase I will likely hear before the week is out. Perhaps this will be the year they have a special on “Speedos”. If that’s the case…I’m sorry. I am soooo sorry. I swear, I will do better next year.
