I’m fully aware that we live in a voyeuristic society and there are “visuals” to be found everywhere. However we need to be careful that we don’t create “celebrities” out of the vicious and heartless animals who killed Tori. The stories need to be covered but do we really need to see pictures of these two anymore? Does TV need to run the footage of these two being taken into custody anymore? Someone suggested that any story about the trial or post-trial should include a photo of Tori instead of the killers. Tori is the one we need to remember, not these two monsters.

Rest in peace Tori....

This is a very sad day. Thankfully justice was done and two vicious, heartless killers are going to prison but Tori is still gone and no verdict can change that. I believe with all my heart that Tori is safe and protected and no one can ever hurt her again. Many times in the last three years I’ve wished I could comfort Tori and tell her how sorry we are that this awful thing happened to her. However, depending on what beliefs you hold dear, maybe Tori is now trying to comfort us. This dreadful and despicable case is over and hopefully the two monsters who committed this heinous crime will be in prison, literally, until the day they die. Tonight we offer our thoughts and prayers for Tori, her family and her friends……

Is honesty becoming extinct?

I walked out to my car after my show last week and noticed substantial scratches on the left rear, above and beside the tail light. Clearly someone smacked into me at some point and then sped off. There’s no dent but the damage is obvious. Don’t get me wrong: I’m not at all happy about this and years ago, I’d have blown a gasket. But first and foremost, there’s nothing I can do about someone so morally bereft that they damaged something that belongs to someone else without accepting responsibility. It is disappointing that there are more and more selfish people who care little or nothing about others. Unfortunately is seems to be more common than it used to be.

For some of us, it truly is akin to losing one of the Beatles. Levon was born in Arkansas but working in Ontario for so long with Ronnie Hawkins and being the only Yank in an otherwise all Canadian band makes him an honorary Hoser. One of the most amazing things about The Band is that everyone was a major piece of the band. Robbie Robertson got a lot of the credit but he was part of the process. Levon wrote with him, Richard Manuel and Rick Danko’s vocals were riveting and sometimes haunting and Garth Hudson was a virtuoso that they simply couldn’t have lived without. This was truly one of the greatest bands ever, with lyrics that were as intelligent ...

Hall of Fame needs to be more selective...

Award shows and similar ego inflations have become so common place that they scarcely mean anything anymore. Getting a star on the Hollywood walk of fame is about as special as buying a newspaper these days. Another gesture that once meant a great deal was a hall of fame induction, be it in sports or entertainment. People are being afforded these honours that are in no way, shape or form deserving of them. What that does, in some cases, is extend the wait for some who do belong. A lower standard for induction has also diminished the accomplishment for those who deserve the recognition as the prestige has long since disappeared. I make the case that the wonderful Laura Nyro should’ve been inducted long before her posthumous entry this week. On the other side of the ledger, Axl Rose from Guns & Roses said he declined his induction into the Rock and ...

Terry Fox: never forget

My Terry Fox story began when he was running toward Oshawa in 1980. I was the midday announcer on Oshawa radio and found myself talking the entire run up quite a bit. I was, however, quite naive as I’d never see Terry run. All I’d ever seen was photographs so I assumed his version of ‘running’ was pretty close to mine. I was on the air as he had entered the city, coming along Bond Street, which ran behind our radio station. While records were playing I’d run to the back door to await my first look at Terry. When he finally came into view, I was dumb struck. The hop-skip that we all know so well now was nothing like I thought he was doing. I couldn’t believe he’d run from Newfoundland like this.
The following September, when Terry’s cancer returned and he was taken home to BC, the people ...

50/50

I sat down to watch the movie “50/50” over the weekend. It’s partially based on the real life experiences of the author, Will Reiser, who happens to be good friends with one of the stars, Seth Rogen. I’d heard good things about the movie but given the loss of my Mom last summer to cancer, I had to wait until I felt ready. What the movie did for me was help me remember us dealing with Mom’s illness, her amazing strength during it all, and how often she made us laugh. Talk of cancer and death can stop most people cold and it should, but if you find yourself in that situation with a loved one, this movie helps you realize there is no “manual” filled with tips for the correct way to act. I thought most of the dialogue was very well done and real. I think Rogen is a ...

Eric should be allowed to play...

Eric Dompierre is an example of what’s good about sports. Eric loves to play basketball for his Ishpeming High School team in up-state Michigan but his playing days may be over. Eric was born with Down’s Syndrome so he started school a year later than the kids his age. Next year will be his senior year but he’ll be 19, a year older than everyone else, and there’s a rule in the Michigan High School Athletic Association that doesn’t allow anyone over the age of 18 to play sports. Eric’s family and the Ishpeming school district have both submitted revisions to the rule but both have been denied. The MHSAA should look at the fact that 23 other states allow participation for students with disabilities who are over 18. Eric hasn’t let his challenges stop him from what he’s wanted to do but the MHSAA may do just that. More ...
