A car fire in Guelph yesterday has the cops thinking arson. Guelph Fire responded to a blaze at 42 Essex St. yesterday afternoon to find a car completely in flames. The fire was quickly put out but investigators noticed what appeared to be an arson attempt on another car in the same driveway. Damage has been pegged at more then 5000 dollars, the investigation is ongoing.
Starting today and running through til next Sunday is Family Fishing Week in Ontario. The event is sponsored by a diverse range of government and private organizations and these LICENSE FREE periods are designed to remind people of the recreational and economic value of Ontario’s recreational fishery The Grand River Conservation Authority is encouraging new anglers to try their luck at any one of its 11-parks.
Visitors to GRCA parks must still pay regular admission fees. Information on fishing in the Grand River watershed is available on the conservation authority’s website in the “fishing” section under “recreation”.
Around 3:30 yesterday EMS responded to a serious car crash on county rd 44 near hwy 7. The 2 drivers were taken to Guelph General hospital with minor injuries. The lone passenger was air-lifted to Hamilton General in serious condition. The investigation continues.
Egypt is a country on edge this morning after bloody clashes left 30 people dead and more than 300 injured. Supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi battled yesterday with his opponents in Cairo, Alexandria, and other cities across Egypt. Morsi’s supporters say the military carried out a coup last Wednesday by toppling Egypt’s first democratically elected president. The Muslim brotherhood party says it won’t work with the new military-backed interim leader.
Waterloo Regional Police are suspecting foul play after the body of a woman was found in the Grand River yesterday afternoon.
A group of teenagers were swimming in the river near the Kitchener Humane Society when they noticed something suspicious and called cops.
Police do not yet know when the woman died or how long the body was in the water. An autopsy has been scheduled to take place in Hamilton today.
It was a busy day in the NHL as noon yesterday marked the kick-off of the free agency period. The Leafs didn’t wast any time picking up Toronto native David Clarkson from the New Jersey Devils. The Buds also re-singed center Tyler Bozak to a 5 year 21-million dollar deal.
A new era begins in Ottawa as Daniel Alfredson has left the nations captial to head to hockey town. The Red Wings have singed the veteren to a 3.5 million dollar one-year deal.
Jarome Iginla is now a Bruin after inking a one-year deal.

Guelph Royals jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead but it didn’t last as the London Majors came back to win 3-2. Royal look to get back on the winning side, they take on Kitchener tonight at Hastings Stadium.

In the CFL last night, The Saskatchewan Roughriders took out the Calgary Stampeders 36-21. The Ti-cats have their home opener tomorrow night at Alumni Stadium.
